Stearic acid, octadecanoic acid, has a simple structure: CH3(CH2)16COOH. It is produced by hydrolysis of oils and is mainly used
to produce stearate. Dissolve each gram in 21 ml of ethanol, 5 ml of benzene, 2 ml of  or 6 ml of .

Stearic acid is a fatty acid widely found in nature. Almost all fats and oils contain varying amounts of stearic acid. Animal fat content is high, such as 24% in butter, and vegetable oils have smaller amounts. Camellia oil is 0.8%, palm oil is 6%, but cocoa butter is as high as 34%. There are two main production methods for industrial stearic acid: fractionation and pressing. A decomposing agent is added to the hardened oil, and then the crude fatty acid is hydrolyzed, followed by washing, distillation, and decolorization to obtain the finished product.
