Zinc oxide is an oxide of zinc that is insoluble in water but soluble in acids and strong bases. It is a white solid, so it is also called zinc white. It can be obtained by burning zinc or roasting sphalerite (zinc sulfide). In nature, zinc oxide is the main component of the mineral zincite. There are two ways to make artificial zinc oxide: by oxidizing pure zinc or roasting zinc ore. Zinc oxide is used as an additive in a variety of materials and products, including plastics, ceramics, glass, cement, lubricants[2], paints, ointments, adhesives, gap filling materials, pigments, foods (zinc supplements), batteries, ferrite materials, flame retardant materials[3] and medical first aid bandages.
Zinc oxide is a wide bandgap semiconductor material with a bandgap of about 3.3eV at room temperature and an exciton binding energy of up to 60meV. It is expected to replace GaN as a material for ultraviolet LDs and LEDs. It has important applications in the field of optoelectronics.

1) Used in many types of paints, including anti-rust paint, water-soluble indoor/outdoor paints and oil-based paints.
